Beware of Romeos, Police warn maids returning from abroad

Police yesterday warned housemaids returning home to be aware of crooks who deceive girls by posing as reputed and rich businessmen and start a relationship to rob them of their cash and gold jewelery.

Police stumbled on this when they arrested a suspect who deceived a girl in Sewanagala and duped her to part with her gold chain worth Rs 90,000.

Investigations revealed the suspect deceived several girls who returned after foreign employment. Police said his modus operandi was to first find their telephone numbers and make contact with them. “Next he hired a luxury car and visited the girl’s parents posing as a car sale owner. The girl and her parents fell prey to the man’s smooth talk. He then tactically took their gold jewellery and money,” Police said.

Police found the suspect had been involved in several incidents of the same nature and warned the public and housemaids returning from abroad to be vigilant and also to contact police if they had been deceived or cheated by such persons.
