Accused Mayor appears before Police

The Wattegama Mayor, whom the Police were looking for over an incident where a fruit seller was assaulted in Wattegama on August 2, appeared at Wattegama Police yesterday, Police media spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said. The mayor was produced before the Teldeniya magistrate yesterday.


Navy nabs poachers

The Navy arrested two Chinese fishing trawlers with 37 Chinese nationals for illegally poaching in Sri Lankan waters at 15 nautical miles east of Batticaloa on Monday. Two Sri Lankan fishermen, residents of Potuvil were also arrested along with the two trawlers. They are being questioned in Navy detention while the two fishermen were handed over to the Trincomalee Harbour Police for further investigations.


Search commences for murder suspects

The Narammala Police launched a search operation to arrest the suspects in connection with the murder of a 58-year-old woman on August 4 in Murutennage, Udawatte in Narammala. The Narammala hospital judicial medical officer carried out the postmortem and confirmed that K Ungi of Udawatte was murdered by manual strangulation.


Illegal migrants remanded

Marawila magistrate remanded 41 persons until August 22 who were arrested while trying to illegally migrate to another country via the sea route.

The group was arrested by the Police on Sunday at South Kammalawella in Waikkala.


Housemaid granted bail

A housemaid who was arrested at Bandaranayake International Airport for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 2.4 million from her employer in Malayasia was released on Rs 50,000 cash bail and a surety of Rs 500,000 by the Negambo magistrate. The next hearing of the case will be on Friday.


Five women at brothel remanded

Five persons including four women who were arrested in a brothel at Mount Lavinia were remanded until August 20 by Mount Lavinia magistrate when they were produced in court on Monday.


Puffers on plane arrested

Two Sri Lankan passengers who smoked in the toilet and behaved in an unruly manner on a plane flying from Kuwait to Colombo were taken into custody by Bandaranaike International Airport Police on Monday.

The arrested passengers, residents of Kirimatiyana and Udadeniya were found smoking inside the toilet in UL 230 passenger aircraft after the multi sensor smoke detectors in the plane went off. The two passengers started to behave violently when they were asked not to smoke by the crew members. The head pilot handed the two persons to air port police when the plane landed at the BIA. They were produced in Colombo No 1 magistrate's court yesterday.


Cattle rustlers arrested

Meepilimana STF arrested three persons while they were illegally transporting a herd of 23 cattle in a lorry at Nanu Oya yesterday morning. Police found one cattle dead among the cramped herd. The suspects were transporting the herd from Walapane to Nanu Oya. They were handed over to Nanu Oya police for further investigations.


Three arrested

Three persons who attempted to cheat women of Rs 100,000 on the pretext of promising to get a driving license were arrested by Akuressa police.

The Police arrested the suspects following a complaint they received which stated that three persons who posed off as authorized personnel of the technical and tertiary education commission and also as a registered institute in the skills development fund had misled the women, on the pretext of issuing a driving license.

The suspects had informed the women via SMS message that they had to pay an initial payment of Rs 2,500 to receive the driving license. The women had also been asked to report to a school with the said amount of money.

The respective institutes had not given the suspects authorization to charge money or to provide any other service. Police also seized fraudulently made franks, documents with forged signatures of the chairman and the secretary of the skills development fund. The suspects were produced at the Matara magistrate court yesterday.
