The United People’s Freedom Alliance candidates list in the Eastern
Province is very strong so that victory over the Opposition is
guaranteed as the people would pay their gratitude for the massive
development brought to the province covering all the fields in the
aftermath of the eradication of terrorism, said Women’s Affairs Deputy

He made this observation at a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)
press conference at the Mahaweli Centre.
The deputy minister further said the nomination lists of the UPFA of
the three districts in the Eastern Province are led by representatives
of three communities as the province consists of Sinhalese, Tamils and
Muslims in equal proportions.
He said that UPFA candidates contesting from the Ampara district are
led by a Sinhala Buddhist, Batticaloa district candidates are led by a
Tamil while the Trincomalee district candidates are led by a Muslim.
The deputy minister further said the government constructed bridges,
renovated tanks, irrigation canals, provided electricity and water to
the Eastern Province. In the meantime, the government provided
facilities for fisherfolk, immensely enabling them to lift their living
standards to an unimaginable level. He added therefore the people would
vote the UPFA by a landslide.
Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha said when he went
to hand over the nominations in 2008 he had to travel 80 miles in an
armored car due to the bad security situation. Those days, bomb blasts
were a daily occurrence in the province. However, the situation has
changed. He added that people could travel at any time of the day in the
area as well as any other part of the country without any fear.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, National Languages and Social
Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Child Development and Women’s
Affairs Deputy Minister M L A M Hisbullah also spoke at the press
conference.
