The United People’s Freedom Alliance’s (UPFA) victory at the
Provincial Council election is assured due to the weak nature of the
Opposition, including UNP and the JVP, coupled with the unprecedented
development, SLFP General Secretary and Health Minister Maithripala
Sirisena, said.

He made this observation at a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)
press conference at the Mahaweli Centre.
The minister further said that the UPFA has initiated a campaign
immediately after handing over the nominations and plans are afoot to
hold a main rally in each of the seven districts of the three provinces
with the participation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sirisena stated that the UPFA is confident of victory as the
government has initiated massive development projects not only in the
three provinces where Provincial Council elections are due but in the
entire country.
“No one can point a finger at the government and question it about
the country’s development as it has brought unprecedented development in
all the sectors in the aftermath of the elimination of terrorism”.
He said, “ the UPFA government also has established democracy in the
country.”
Minister Sirisena further said that the UNP led governments from 1977
to 1994 and Ranil led UNP government from 2002 to 2004 have been
rejected by the people due to their proper understanding of the UNP. He
added that the public rejected the UNP for the infamous conduct such as
betraying the country through Ranil-Praba Agreement, abductions, breach
of fundamental rights, putting the independence of judiciary at stake by
hurling stones at judges’ homes and such other incident and their
attempt to fold the electoral map.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Petroleum Industries Minister
Susil Premajayantha, National Languages and Social Integration Minister
Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Child Development and Women’s Affairs Deputy
Minister M L A M Hisbullah also spoke at the briefing.
