Avoid polythene in election campaign - Environment Minister

Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said; "I request all members of political parties contesting the forthcoming Provincial Council elections to refrain from using polythene, plastics and other materials that do not decay, for election campaign propaganda.

"If they are used it should be done in a manner that do not damage the environment, he said.

The minister was speaking at a media briefing held in Kurunegala.

He said, "all politicians should extend their hand to keep the environment clean and pleasant.

"It would serve as a good example to the future generations,

"Due to the excessive use of polythene, the environment is gravely polluted. Every citizen should assist the government to create a pollution free environment for the future heirs of the country", the minister said.
