Rs 5m for poster-busting

Rs five million has been allocated by the Elections Secretariat to the Police Department for removing unauthorized election propaganda material in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces.

The amount would be used to pay wages of workers employed to remove illegal posters and related material in the three provinces where the Provincial Council elections are held, Head of the Police Election Secretariat Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne said.

The Police also requested the public to assist them to maintain law and order by submitting complaints regarding individuals or groups displaying posters, placards or cutouts in violation of election laws.

DIG Navaratne also added that legal action will be taken against those who violate election rules. So far no complaints have been received about such violations pertaining to the Provincial Council election.
