Police swoop on absconding suspects

Police arrested 17,595 persons who had been on outstanding warrants, in one month, Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said yesterday. The Police initiated an islandwide operation from June 20 to July 20 to arrest 21,798 persons against whom warrants had been issued by courts and succeeded in taking into custody 17,595 suspects covering 43 police divisions. The largest number of 1,234 suspects were arrested from Anuradhapura while 894 were arrested in Kandy. Police arrested 884 out of 1,082 persons who had warrants issued against them in Ratnapura.

Kilinochchi accounted for the least number arrested which was 27 out of 29 against whom warrants were out.

Mankulam Police arrested 37 persons - all the absconding in that area - while out of the 59 in Mannar, 57 were arrested.

All suspects were produced before court.
