Not feasible to stop women seeking jobs abroad - SLFEB chief
Priyanka Kurugala
Many non government organisations have requested the Sri Lanka
Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) to stop sending women abroad for
employment. However, these organisations are not providing solutions to
economic problems of these women, chairman Amal Senadilankara said.

He was addressing a meeting of the ‘Rataviruwo Organisation’ at the
Maharagama Divisional Secretariat Office recently.
The chairman said many women migrate for employment as housemaids to
secure their children’s future.
“Therefore it is not justifiable to stop them from migrating,”
Senadilankara said.
“These women go abroad to improve the lives of their family members.
Therefore it is not justifiable to stop their migration,” he said.
The Rataviruwo Organisation commenced programmes to solve problems of
families where women have migrated for employment. The organisation
hopes to minimise problems in these families and find solutions to
strengthen the future of these people, he said.
Senadilankara said the Rataviruwo Organisation will be empowered
through this programme.
“A programme has been designed for the proper investment of the
income earned by migrant housemaids,” he said.
A loan scheme has also been started to solve their housing problems,
he said.
The chairman said the SLFEB policy is to discourage women migrating
as housemaids.
Instead they propose to find lucrative employment in other skilled
categories for women.
They have initiated several programmes to realise this objective. |
