Development takes strides in Uva

Rs 2,229 has been set aside for the renovation of the road network in
the Moneragala and Badulla districts, Uva Province Chief Minister
Sasheendra Rajapaksa said.
Renovation of roads in rural areas and plantations will be given
priority, he said.
The Chief Minister said: “Due to the lack transport facilities, the
people cannot transport their produce to towns.
Rs 230 million will be spent for the renovation of plantation and
rural roads under the Sumaga programme, a brainchild of Uva Province
Road Development Minister Kumarasiri Ratnayaka.
The World Bank has provided machinery worth Rs 10.8 million for the
purpose.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to raise the nutritional standards
of the rural folk and veterinary resource in the province spending Rs 35
million.
Low income group families comprising 5,841 have been provided with
136,40 chicks under the Divi Neguma programme.
About 340 cattle and 1,000 goats were also distributed. Funds were
provided for 500 cattle sheds.
The Chief Minister said the Badulla and Moneragala districts suffered
from malnutrition.
He said Rs 280 million has been spent for the renovation of tanks,
anicuts and canals in the province. Irrigation Director Janaka Wijekone
said about 15,000 families have benefited from the project.
Meanwhile, a thousand families who did not have ownership deeds were
awarded deeds by President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently. |
