Call to keep away from plastic decorations

The Environment Ministry yesterday requested candidates and political parties to refrain from using polythene and plastic decorations in election campaigns in an excessive and callous manner.

A ministry spokesman said polythene and plastic not properly discarded are a serious health and an environmental hazard.

He said the majority of mosquito breeding grounds have been created due to polythene and plastic thrown away by the public.

The spokesman requested the candidates to adhere to an environment- friendly policy during the forthcoming elections. He requested political parties to be extra vigilant on the management of polythene and plastic in election campaigns to support the government’s endeavour to curb the dengue epidemic.

The spokesman requested political parties to clean the premises of their political meetings soon after those were concluded.
