Wedding meal sends over 400 to hospital

Over 400 persons were hospitalised following food poisoning after
attending a wedding in Kottiyapaleim, Batticaloa yesterday. Police Media
Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said 168 men, 166 women and 93 children were
admitted to the Batticaloa District Hospital by noon yesterday with
symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, stomachache and fever.
Those who consumed chicken for lunch at a wedding in Palliyadi,
Kottiyapalai, Vavunativu on Sunday afternoon had fallen sick in the
night, Police said.
Sources said they were admitted to hospital since Sunday night with
the number increasing yesterday. Investigations revealed vegetarian and
non – vegetarian meals were served at the wedding. Those who consumed
non- vegetarian meals, including the bride and the groom had not fallen
sick. Twenty seven guests, including children were provided special
treatment as their condition was worse than the others.
Investigations are continuing.
