Women arrested at brothel

Kuliyapitiya Police raided a brothel house operating on Parakkrama Mawatha in Kuliyapitiya and arrested three women on Sunday.

They were produced before the Kuliyapitiya magistrate yesterday. Police are investigating to arrest those in charge of the place.

Fire destroys 50 acres

A forest fire that broke out in the Randenigala forest reserve in Bolagandawela, Nuwara Eliya district destroyed over 50 acres of forest on Sunday.

Theripaha Police extinguished the fire with the assistance of the people in the area. No damage was reported to people or animals. Theripaha Police are investigating.

Wanted suspect nabbed

Tangalle division criminal investigation unit arrested a person on Sunday, who was warranted by courts for committing several burglaries in Weeraketiya.

Police said the suspect was involved in six burglaries.

They recovered a part of the stolen goods. The suspect was warranted nine times by the Walasmulla, Hambantota, Embilipitiya, Matara, Negambo, Kegalle and Anuradhapura magistrate courts.

He was produced before the Walasmulla magistrate yesterday. Weeraketiya Police are investigating.

Man assaulted to death

A man, 59-year-old A Arimuththu, assaulted by another person in Gampola, succumbed to injuries at the Kandy hospital on Sunday.

Police said the incident took place near Bothalapitiya rail gate on July 4.

The victim was first admitted to the Gampola hospital and later transferred to Kandy.

The suspect responsible for the death fled the area.

Gampola Police are investigating.

Cannabis dealers remanded

Two persons arrested with 39 kg cannabis were remanded until July 12 and 14 by the Walasmulla and Wellawaya magistrates.

Katuwana Police arrested the first suspect at Gagulandeniya with 16.688 kg cannabis while the other suspect was arrested by the Hambegamuwa Police in Kukulkatuwa with 22.560 kg cannabis.

Spouses' fight ends in aunt's death

A 75-year-old woman, B G Anulawathi, died after she was assaulted by a wooden stick at Madulla in Theripaha on Sunday. The incident occurred when the woman intervened into a fight between her nephew and his wife.

Police arrested the suspect who allegedly attacked the woman and was produced before the Walapane magistrate yesterday. Theirpaha Police are investigating.

Nabbed with heroin

Police Narcotics Bureau arrested a woman and a man in possession of 77 grammes of heroin in Pore and Biyagama on Sunday.

The woman was arrested on Malabe- Athurugiriya road while she was transporting the drugs. The other suspect was taken into custody when the police checked a three-wheeler on new Kandy road in Biyagama. Police are investigating.

Serviceman netted for rape

Welikanda Police arrested a person, revealed to be a serviceman, for allegedly molesting a 15-year-old school girl in Welikanda yesterday. Police media spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana said the suspect had tackled the girl near a veterinary office on the Sinhapura road while she was riding her bicycle to school. The suspects had then dragged the girl into a shrub.

Passengers travelling in a bus near the Welikanda- Sinhapura road had seen the incident and acted immediately to hand over the suspect to the Welikanda Army camp. They also informed the Welikanda Police.

Welikanda Police later detected the suspect running on the road near the Welikanda stadium and arrested him. The girl was admitted to the Welikanda hospital.

Warranted suspects arrested

One hundred and seven warranted suspects were arrested after a sudden raid in Matara.

In the search operation on Sunday, Police arrested 78 persons who were on day warrants and 46 open warranted persons. Matara division SSP directed the raid in which a CI , Sub Inspectors, Police Sergeants, Constables and Woman Police Constables and a police security assistant searched the area. Investigations are continuing.

Suspect arrested with fraudulent notes

A man who used two fraudulent notes of Rs 2,000 denomination to purchase goods at a shop in Amandoluwa, Seeduwa was arrested by Ja Ela Police on Saturday. The suspect was remanded until July 18 by the Negombo magistrate.
