The ability to speak in public is an important requirement today. It helps to improve leadership qualities and motivate people. Without motivation, even the most skilled person or team is unlikely to achieve great things.

At a time like this Junior Speech Craft Training Programme at Wesley College was introduced for the age groups between six and ten years at a school level for the first time in Sri Lanka to sharpen the skills in public speaking.

Wesley College has organized this programme for the third consecutive year. It was fully sponsored by Rotary Club Of Colombo North and was successfully concluded with the awards ceremony held recently at the Wesley College main hall.

The winners were awarded gold medals while the first and second runners up were awarded silver and bronze medals respectively.

The principal of Wesley College mentioned that today every child should sharpen his skills in speaking not only in one language but in all three languages.

Also he thanked the Rotary club of Colombo North for the support given to continue this major event where over 400 students received certificates and medals.

The guest of honour, President of Rotary Club of Colombo North Rtn.Marshad Barry mentioned in his speech his club is indeed happy to be a part of this Project.

Also he mentioned that speech craft programme was the Brain Child of Principal Dr. Shanthi Mac Leland who suggested this idea to Rotary wanting all Wesleyites to be fluent in all three languages .

This year Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa launched a tri-lingual initiative, aimed at making sure that all in Sri Lanka learn the three main languages (Sinhalese, Tamil and English). In addition the year 2012 has been declared as the year for a 'Trilingual Sri Lanka.'

The chief guest at the awards ceremony was District Governor Elect of the Rotary District 3220 Rtn.Darshan John who was an old wesleyite. He said he is indeed happy to be the chief guest at this memorable occasion and recommended this kind of programme to all other schools too.

Also he mentioned that this will be a great motivation to the students who participated to become great orators in future whom will bring honour and fame to mother Lanka.

Wesley primary sectional head ODC Fernando was given a token of appreciation foe her dedicated service in organizing this event.
