Economic summit begins today

The 13th Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2012 will be held from today to the 13th of July, 2012 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. Organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the premier business Chamber in the country, the event will bring together a large number of business leaders, government officials, ambassadors and policy makers on to one platform to discuss issues related to Sri Lanka's economy.

“The Sri Lanka Economic Summit commencing today is aimed at bringing the private sector and some of the experts to discuss matters connected with positioning Sri Lanka in the Global Economy. The outcome of the event would help us formulate the future direction and priorities,” Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Secretary General/CEO Harin Malwatte told the Daily News Business.

Similar to the previous years, the carefully designed programme of the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2012, addresses the most important business issues before the country, he said.

The event has attracted a large number of keynote speakers and panelists from Sri Lanka and abroad. We have also been able to attract experts in the subjects to be discussed at the summit. There has been a tremendous interest by the corporate sector to participate at this well looked forward to event. There had been a record number of registrations for the 2012 event and we are looking forward to very effective deliberations and positive outcomes,” Malwatte said.

The Chief Guest at today’s inauguration, would be Senior Minister and Presidential Advisor Dr. Sarath Amunugama. The inauguration session will be addressed by Guest Speaker Gurcharan Das, Author, Columnist and Management Consultant on “Are there lessons for Sri Lanka from the experience of the SAARC countries?” and the keynote address would be delivered by Dr. Kalpana Kochhar, Chief Economist – South Asia, The World Bank. The Chamber has been inviting young parliamentarians and business leaders to the last session of the Economic Summit in the past few summits. This would continue in 2012 as well. The last session of the summit will feature politicians and business leaders speaking on the theme of the event “Positioning Sri Lanka in the Global economy.”

The three day-long event would feature eight plenary sessions under a diversity of themes titled: Sri Lankan Economy in perspective, moving beyond conflict, opportunities in emerging markets, branding Sri Lanka, skills and productivity to compete in the global market, ease of doing business - Sri Lanka ranked 89 - fact or fiction? investing in Sri Lanka and positioning Sri Lanka in the global economy. The last session will be a panel discussion featuring a number of young leaders on the theme “Positioning Sri Lanka in the Global Economy.”

The Chamber has invited young parliamentarians and business leaders to the last session of the Economic Summit 2012.
