The government’s decision to hold three Provincial Council elections at a time the country is experiencing a drought shows the confidence and courage of the government, Mass Media and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Minister Keheliya

Addressing the Cabinet press briefing at the ministry premises yesterday, the minister said the government is quite confident of facing these elections, despite the fact that it might be the worst period for an election due to the drought affecting the farming community.

He observed the decision to dissolve three Provincial Councils was made in accordance with the Constitution.

He said that the holding of elections is a political decision which might change from time to time.

He noted that every government in power, selects the time most favorable to them to hold elections, adding that it is an execution of legitimate powers vested upon the governing party from the Constitution.

He also said the election to the Northern Provincial Council would be held as soon as the necessary preparations, such as, the compilation of registered voters' lists, resettlement and demining process is completed.
