Govt ready for elections - Minister

The government’s decision to hold three Provincial Council elections
at a time the country is experiencing a drought shows the confidence and
courage of the government, Mass Media and Information Minister and
Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Addressing the Cabinet press briefing at the ministry premises
yesterday, the minister said the government is quite confident of facing
these elections, despite the fact that it might be the worst period for
an election due to the drought affecting the farming community.
He observed the decision to dissolve three Provincial Councils was
made in accordance with the Constitution.
He said that the holding of elections is a political decision which
might change from time to time.
He noted that every government in power, selects the time most
favorable to them to hold elections, adding that it is an execution of
legitimate powers vested upon the governing party from the Constitution.
He also said the election to the Northern Provincial Council would be
held as soon as the necessary preparations, such as, the compilation of
registered voters' lists, resettlement and demining process is
completed. |
