SI caught for extortion

A Police Sub Inspector attached to the Intelligence Unit of the
Colombo Fraud Bureau was taken into custody in connection with an
alleged extortion of Rs. 2 million, demanding a ransom of Rs 1 million
and abduction, by the CID.
The suspect was remanded until July 2 on being produced before
Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli on Tuesday.
OIC Mihindu Kumaratunge said Abdul Salam Siyamand Abdul Rahim Naushad
operating a Communication Centre at Dam Street, Grandpass had received a
telephone call accusing that the centre was used as an illegal foreign
currency transaction spot. About 2.00 pm on the particular day, four
suspects had entered the centre posing as CID sleuths and had solicited
Rs. 5 million for not taking them into custody.
They had obtained Rs. 2 million reminding that another Rs.1 million
should be handed over to them later.
The suspects had taken Abdul Salam Siyam as a hostage.
When the four suspects had arrived to collect the balance, Police
arrested two suspects along with a red coloured vehicle. The other two
had escaped.
