Suspect in Katuwana double murder identified - IGP

‘One suspect wanted in connection with the Katuwana double murder has been identified by a witness. Police are taking measures to arrest him and get to the root of the crime,’ said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Ilangakoon yesterday.

He made this observation yesterday at a press conference at the Media Centre for National Security in connection with the Katuwana double murder committed on June 15 by a group of unidentified gunmen.

He said a strong contingents of Police, Police STF, Police SOCO unit, CID, Army, Intelligence Unit and other relevant authorities under the direction of the Defence Secretary are conducting thorough investigations into the crime.

The Police has so far questioned 25 persons and the CID 23 persons in this connection and recorded statements

He said the Police learnt through investigations that about 60 persons had participating in the JVP rally. About 10 persons riding four motor - cycles had come at around 7 pm and opened fire at the rally killing two and injuring another two.

The IGP further said the Police responding to the message rushed to the crime scene and took measures to transport the victims to hospitals. Police SOCO Unit officers arrived at the scene to conduct primary investigations. The Army and Police Special Task Force were also deployed to investigate and raid under the directions of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

IGP Ilangakoon also stated that as the crime was severe, the CID was directed to conduct investigations from June 16. Meanwhile, the Fingerprint Department and Police Dog Division also were directed to conduct investigations. The magistrate too visited the scene.

The intelligence units were directed to conduct investigations.

He added all probable measures will be taken to bring the culprits to book.
