Spa Ceylon gives Ceylon Tea a new dimesion

Shiwantha Dias and Shalin Balasuriya

Entrepreneurial brothers, Shiwantha Dias and Shalin Balasuriya, who singlehandedly infused glitz and glamour into our age old Ayurveda traditions and rituals with their Spa Ceylon range of luxury bath and wellness products, not to mention their luxury spas, have once again broken ground, in fact have created a world first with the introduction of a complete range of spa formulae, bath & body care, as well as treatment products infused with 100% Pure Ceylon Tea!

“The world’s finest tea comes from Ceylon, and tea is proven to be rich in natural anti oxidants, chlorophylls and polyphenols which offer potent therapeutic as well as soothing benefits when applied externally. Spa Ceylon being a producer of fine luxury Ayurveda products for the world, it was only fitting that we blend pure Ceylon Tea [organically grown], with Ayurveda herbs and oils to create this unique range of tea based products”, said Managing Director, Spa Ceylon, Shiwantha Dias.

Spa Ceylon’s totally natural Ceylon Tea range is infused with organically grown & processed White Tea, Green Tea and Black Ceylon Tea blended to a proprietary formula. Manufactured according to Ayurvedic principles of health and well being, the range includes Ceylon Tea & Citron Massage & Bath Oil, Ceylon Tea & Spice Body Scrub, Ceylon Tea & Lemongrass Bath Tea, Ceylon Tea & Ylang Hand & Body Lotion, Ceylon Tea & Tuberose Body Butter, Ceylon Tea & Aloe Soothing Body Mist, and a range of aromatic Ceylon Tea Cleansing Bars. “Our teas are sourced from organically certified pure Ceylon tea producers and we are extremely particular about the quality of the tea we use and its source”, said Dias.

He went on to say that the new Ceylon Tea range was manufactured using highly concentrated tea extracts and tea infusions which were processed using traditional Ayurveda manufacturing procedures as prescribed in the ancient texts. “This process ensures that the natural soothing and anti oxidant properties of the tea are present in the final products”.

Spa Ceylon products are manufactured within their Group companies, at their modern 75,000 sq ft manufacturing facility which is a BOI project. It is GMP certified to the latest EU manufacturing standards and is a licensed Ayurveda manufacturing laboratory, registered under the department of Ayurveda of the government of Sri Lanka.

Simultaneously, Spa Ceylon has also introduced a range of Ceylon Tea based soothing and protective spa rituals which are practiced exclusively at their signature spas across the country. The Ritual includes a detoxing and purifying body scrub with tea leaves, tea seeds as well as exotic Ceylon spices, followed by a relaxing Royal Kandyan massage with Citrus and Ceylon Tea infused aromatic Ayurveda oils.

The Spa Ceylon brand is one that is uniquely Sri Lankan; incorporating age old traditions and rituals, yet catering to the modern sophisticated traveler who seeks to be pampered and indulged.

It cleverly caters to an ever growing niche market, one that promises a big return on investment for both the country as well as the manufacturers themselves. “Today’s traveler, the kind Sri Lanka needs to attract, requires first to be enticed and then pampered and indulged; it is this particular segment that Spa Ceylon has endeavoured to cultivate and cater to”, said Spa Ceylon’s Marketing Director, Shalin Balasuriya. “Our Ceylon Tea range, which capitalizes on the country’s most famed export, coupled with age old Ayurveda recipes and traditions, will without a doubt put Sri Lanka on the map, alongside countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, which are famed internationally and are much sought out for their luxurious spas and spa treatments”.

The company numbers over 300 staff, while indirect employment is generated to approximately a further 300.

The Spa Ceylon brand which was first launched in May 2009 has developed in a short span of three years to encompass luxury bath and wellness products, spas, as well as up market retail outlets.

The first stylish yet traditional boutique was opened at Crescat, while their latest outlet is at the legendary Dutch Hospital.

Both Balasuriya and Dias are extremely selective when it comes to the image and positioning of their brand and guard it’s hallmark luxurious exclusivity. From advertising to packaging to the staffing at their spas, the luxurious exclusivity of Spa Ceylon is closely adhered to and monitored.

The brand which is strongly and proudly Sri Lankan is currently exported to India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the Seychelles, Russia and the Maldives.

“Our intention is to enter 10 to 15 EU markets starting with the UK by the end of the year. We also plan to set up our own retail operations in India around the same time; as you can see, we intend taking Spa Ceylon and our age old Ayurveda traditions across the globe”, said the entrepreneurial duo.
