SL Position Paper for Rio+20
Twenty years after the Earth Summit in Rio, world leaders,
international institutions and civil society representatives from around
the world will meet at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable
Development (Rio+20) in Brazil this month to build concrete steps to
reduce poverty, while advancing social equity and environmental
protection.
Sri Lankan Position Paper on Youth, drafted by Youth for a Greener
Sri Lanka (YGSL) platform was presented to the Minister of Environment,
Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Rio+20 Country Focal Point, Secretary to
the Ministry, Basnayake on June 8 at the Solis Hotel, Kotte.
Hejaazite walk
The students and staff of Hejaaz International School have organised
a walk from their school premises to Dehiwela junction to mark World
Environment Day today at 9am.
The walk will be held to make residents aware about enhancing the
city’s aesthetic beauty.
The walk is organised by staff members Prasad Ranasinghe, Anusha
Geethanjali, Nadeeshani Silva and Ayesha Indunil.
The students of Hejaaz International School will carry placards with
environment messages and distribute leaflets to the public.
The programme will be inaugurated by Dehiwela - Mount Lavinia
Municipal Council Mayor Dhanasiri Amarathunga, Deputy Mayor Kesaralal
Gunasekara and member Nazushan Hassan.
Ceremonies mark ex-Speaker’s birthday
Several ceremonies will be held to mark the 91st birthday of former
Speaker M H Mohamed which falls today.
Among the ceremonies are visits to Elders’ Homes and the recital of
dua in mosques.
Meanwhile, Mohamed left for Saudi Arabia yesterday to attend the 41st
annual convention of the Rabithathul Aalamul Islami (World Muslim
League) in Mecca. Sri Lanka Islamic Centre Secretary Sahul Hameed
Mohamed accompanied Mohamed. They will return on June 20.
Halara Muzakkara Majlis
Halara Muzakkara Majlis organised by Adiyathush Shazuliyathul Fassiya,
Sri Lanka will be held today at the Wellawatte Jumma Mosque after Isha
prayers.Kaleefathush Shazuli Seyed Moulavi Alavi Mowlana will be the
guest speaker.
Felicitation ceremony
A felicitation ceremony organised by the public of Homagama
Divisional Secretariat area to bid farewell to Homagama Divisional
Secretary Ariyasiri Jayathilake Karunaratne on his retirement will be
held at the Homagama Central College today at 2 pm.
