Court orders stolen jewellery to be re-exported

The Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Rashmi
Singappuli directed the Central Bank to release the jewellery, valued
over Rs 137 million, stolen from Liana Vourakis jewellery shop in
Athens, Greece.
The judge made this order following an application by President's
Counsel C R de Silva, senior counsel for the complainant Liana Vourakis.
PC C R de Silva submitted to court that the jewellery stolen in
Greece and recovered from Sri Lanka was already identified by the
claimants. The items recovered are now included in the Additional
Inventory list submitted through Athens Interpol to the Interpol
Division of the Criminal Investigations Departments (CID) of the Sri
Lanka Police.
The judge also allowed an application by President's Counsel C R de
Silva and directed Customs to re-export the jewellery to Athens, Greece.
The four suspects alleged to have been involved in the robbery in Greece
were further remanded till June 25.
