Improved performances by Vijitha Central athletes

Athletes of Vijitha Central College Dikwella secured third place in both the boys and girls events securing 98 points and 96 points respectively at the Matara Educational District athletics championship held at the Uyanwatta stadium recently.

Although Vijitha is the sports school in the district and has an athletics ground with a 400 meter running track they only secured 15 places at the 2011 meet but this year they can boast of 58 placings.

It should be noted that any schools in the district were unable to participate at this meet which was held just after the Wesak celebrations on the 8th, 9th and 10th of May.

Piumi Wasana was adjudged the champion athlete in the under 17 girls category winning the 400 meter hurdle, 1500 meters, 800 meters and was also a member of the 4x400 relay team that was placed first.

Thakshila Nileshani was placed first in the 400 meter, 800 meter and 1500 meter events and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that was placed second to be adjudged best under 19 girls athlete at the meet.

Games captain of Vijitha Central college Chalanaka Priyanath Weerasingha has been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian junior Athletic Championship in the javelin throw event. Other athletes of Vijitha Central who won their events at this meet are, K H Menuka (Boys high jump - under-11), K K Dinuri Wathmini (Girls high jump under-11), O M Induranga (100 meters and 200 meters girls under-13), Vimadu Deshika (400 meters boys under-15),

K W Navindu Navodya (High jump girls under-15), Mahesh Tharaka (800 meters boys under-17), Bhavantha Darshana (Putt shot boys under-17), Sajitha Piumantha (Pole vault boys under-17), Dhanuka Sandaruwan (800 meters boys under-19), Sudarshana Bandara (1500 meters boys under-19), Amal Udayanga (High jump Boys under-19), Chalanaka Weerasingha (Javelin throw boys under-19)
