Bandarawela Thomians victorious

St. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa fell short in their pursuit of 257 to suffer a defeat in the hands of St. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela at the Uva Thomian annual cricket encounter-2012 which was played at the Bandarawela esplanade last Saturday.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Anura Tennakoon and Mrs. Tennakoon graced the occasion as the chief guests.

Though the dawn was gloomy, threating inevitable rain which was lashing in the neighbouring towns, Bandarawela Thomians won the toss and elected to bat on a bouncy wicket irrespective of the moisture on the damp pitch. They started their innings elegantly with determination to bring home a profound victory at the end of the day.

Thomians who lost their first wicket when the score was 41 were ultimately balled out for 256 prematurely in 42.2 overs. They were able to reach 256 in 42 overs, thanks to the superb batting display of Miyuru Salinda who scored an unprecedented 46 with an array of lovely boundaries and captured three wickets for 33 runs, making him the Man of the Match.

Chasing a target of 257 for victory, St. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa never looked comfortable and had a poor start when they lost their opening batsman C.V. Dissanayaka for no score. But a fighting knock by W.A.M.M. Silva (56) brought some hope to the hosts who were struggling at one stage of the game. A fine late bowling spell by Hasranga of St. Thomas’ College Bandarawela ensured the glorious victory to St. Thomas College Bandarawela by bowling St. Thomas’ Gurutalawa in 44.4 overs.
