New running sheds for train maintenance

The Sri Lanka Railways has taken measures to set up three running sheds in Galle, Aluthgama and Dematagoda in order to minimize the delays in train maintenance following breakdowns.

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said that train operations on the coastal railway line are expected to be enhanced with the uninterrupted maintenance service provided by these new running sheds.

The Aluthgama running shed which is almost completed was inspected by the Minister recently. It will be detailed with maintenance work of S -11 Power sets. Currently all trains are maintained at the Railways running shed in Dematagoda. With the increase in the number of trains, the shed was found to be inadequate for maintenance operations and a larger maintenance shed was required. Hence it was decided to construct Running Sheds in there areas.

In addition to the present Dematagoda running shed, another new massive running shed is being constructed in Dematagoda. These running sheds will be established as part of the 'Modernization of Coastal Line Railway Track Project' at a cost of US $ 3 million provided under Indian Credit Assistance.
