Three veteran writers to be felicitated
A felicitation ceremony organized by the Sinhala-Tamil Writers’
Association to honour and pay tribute to three veteran writers belonging
to the three communities will be held at the National Library Services
and Documentation Board auditorium Colombo, on May 26 at 3 pm.
The three writers to be honoured are Denagama Siriwardena, Padma
Somakanthan and Dickwelle Kamal.
The programme will also include special lectures by S G Punchihewa,
Prof Saba Jeyarasa and Dr M S M Anas, the launching of several new books
authored by the writers and a book exhibition.
Seminar
A seminar on diabetes and treatments will be held on May 18 at the
Matugama Pradeshiya Sabha auditorium in Matugama at 2.00 pm.A lecture
will be delivered by a well-known Ayurvedic physician , B. A. Ratnapala,
a diabetic specialist. Pradeshiya Sabha, Divisional Secretariat and
Samurdhi Social Development Foundation will organise this seminar.
Seminar on Tagore’s visit to Sri Lanka
Continuing with the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of
Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian Cultural Centre is
organising a full day seminar on Tagore and his visits to Sri Lanka in
collaboration with the Contemporary Centre for Indian Studies,
University of Colombo.
The seminar is to be held on June 12, 2012 in Colombo. Three Indian
scholars and seven Sri Lankan scholars are expected to participate.
Prof. Radha Chakravarty, Prof. Bharati Ray and Prof. Sushoban Adhikary
are expected to participate from India and Prof. Wimal Dissanayake,
Prof. K.N.O Dharmadasa, Dr. Sandagomi Coperahewa, Prof. Vini Vitharana,
Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam, Ravibandhu Vidyapathi and Chandragupta
Thenuwera are the Sri Lankan scholars participating in the seminar.
India to participate in Film Festival
India will be participating in the SAARC Film Festival being held
from May 16 to 20, 2012 at the National Film Corporation Cinema Hall,
Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Two Indian “National Award” winning feature films namely “Ranjana Ami
Ar Asbho Na”, a Bengali language film directed by Anjan Dutta and
“Byari” a film in the Byari language, directed by K.P Suveeran are the
major attractions the Festival.
In addition to feature films, two documentaries titled “Red Building
Where the Sun Sets” directed by Revathy, a leading actress of South
India and another documentary titled “And We Play On”, directed by
Pramod Purswane will be screened.
Pramod Purswane’s film received top honours in the non-feature
category in the 59th National Film Awards of India.
Tribute to late hockey player Vivek Singh
‘And We Play On’ is the “Swarna Kamal” winning non feature film from
India. It is a tribute to late hockey player, Olympian Vivek Singh, and
also a celebration of the hopeful future of the game and the efforts of
the academy his family is running.
The film, broadly shot in Varanasi, where the late player’s family
hails from, takes the viewer to the past showing Vivek Singh’s life just
as it throws light on the future of the young hockey players who were
being trained at the Vivek Singh Academy, Varanasi. This is being
screened on May 17, 2012 at 1130 hours.
Ranjana Ami Ar Asbo Na presents pop music as a force that drives,
destroys and binds relationships.
The film’s characters carry forward this one passion in life as in
death.
Housing for Hambantota youths
Bandula Gunasekara and T K Ariyadasa Malimbada group corr
The National Youth Services Council (NYSC) will build new houses for
21 youths in the Hambantota district under the Sri Lanka Youth Housing
Project.
The NYSC spends Rs 125,000 for each house. Assistance of the
Philanthropists will be taken for the project.
Social worker dies
E. A. Sunil Priyantha Silva, an ex-employee of BCC, SML and Steuat
Manufacturing and a social worker orf the areahas died after a brief
illness. He was 60. He is the eldest brother of Canicias Silva of the
Fund Management Department of Lake House. Funeral will be held at 3.30
pm on Saturday at SS Peter and Pauls Church Ragama, No. 02, Temple Road
, Horape, Ragama.
