'Electricity supplied throughout the day'

Minister Champika Ranawaka

Consumers who have purchased their electricity supplies from the private sector at exorbitant prices and the people who faced several power cuts of six to seven hour periods are now speaking of the present price of electricity. It was like criminals talking about fair justice, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

"Certain people in the Opposition have made statements pointing out that Sri Lanka's electricity bills were the highest throughout Asia. Sri Lanka was the only country in Asia which supplied electricity continuously under fair price rates," the minister said.

'The Tamil Nadu government charges Rs. 5.62 per unit from consumers who use only 30 electricity units. But Sri Lanka charges only Rs.5.00.

'The Tamil Nadu government makes a two hour power cut daily in Chennai, while making 08 to 12 hour power cuts in rural areas.

'The Tamil Nadu government effects two power cuts for the industrial sector as well, but Sri Lanka supplies electricity throughout the day, to both domestic consumers and industrial electricity users under fair rates, Minister Ranawaka explained. (RD)
