Ministry, CMC join hands to improve Greater Colombo sewerage system

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Colombo Mayor A. J. M. Musammil joined hands to improve the Greater Colombo sewerage system which is over a hundred years old, a ministry spokesman said.

The Colombo sewerage and waste water management system is being attended to by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Colombo Municipal Council.

A programme was launched under the leadership of Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana at the Parliamentary complex on May 10 to improve the Greater Colombo sewerage system.

It has been estimated the total coast of this project will be Rs. 12,815 million. The Asian Development Bank will provide Rs 11,000 million and the government will provide Rs. 1815 million with further assistance in the pipeline.

The projects will cover the Colombo Municipal area and parts of Dehiwala/Mt. Lavinia and Kotte Municipalities and part of Kolonnawa Urban Council area, he said. The Colombo Sewerage and Waste Water System is over a hundred years old. Therefore it is in need of extensive improvement. As the system is very old its operational system fails often and improvements have to be effected.

The existing system cannot cope with the population increase and affects the proper sanitation of city dwellers, he said.

It was emphasised that the leading institutions should get together and jointly effect the maintenance and modernization activates. It was also decided to proceed with all activities in accordance with a set time frame by the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry.

The Colombo Municipal Council and National Water Supply and Drainage Board are the main participants of this joint venture together with other institutions which have willingly consented to join them in the project.
