The Social Services Ministry recently handed over 48 newly
constructed houses to low- income families with differently abled
members in the Anuradhapura district, Social Services Minister Felix

"These houses have been built under a special programme initiated on
the directive of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to construct 1,000 houses
for low income earning families with disabilities," the minister said.
"As an initial step, we commenced the construction of 48 houses in
line with the Deyata Kirula national exhibition conducted in Oyamaduwa
last February," he said.
"The other houses are being built in several areas across the
country. Under this programme, action has been taken to construct 1000
houses in each Divisional Secretariat Division. Each house is estimated
to cost cost of Rs 250,000 while the manpower for constructions purposes
will be provided by the residents of the respective areas," he said.
The minister said that the government is always committed to uplift
the lives of families of disabled persons from all walks of life. "We
should not forget people with disabilities. The country is now
experiencing a development boom in the aftermath of the war. We believe
that the real development is a process where certain social needs of
disabled people could be fulfilled. It is clearly evident that the
country has ventured on a progressive journey. |
