Welikada Prison protest suspects re-remanded

The Colombo Crime Detection Division yesterday produced before Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappulli 52 suspects taken into custody in the Welikade Prison disturbance.

Six T-56 rifles and some ammunition used by the prison guards were also produced as production items.

The magistrate ordered the production items to be sent for Government Analyst and re-remanded the suspects.

Early this year the prisoners staged a violent protest against the decision of the prison authorities not to allow food parcels from outside. Several inmates received gun shot injuries.

Several prison guards were also injured with damage to property.

IP Rajapakse along with PS 5659 Kemaratne prosecuted.

Further hearing was postponed for May 17.
