Two women killed in accident

Two women were killed on the spot when a van ran off the road at Hewapola yesterday morning.

The incident took place on the Kurunegala-Kandy main road in opposite the Hewapola Kumara Vidyalaya, around 9.00 am, Mawathagama Police said.

The victims were identified as A M Ariyawathi and Esalinnona of Uda Hewapola.

The police believe that the accident had occurred due to the driver falling asleep.

The driver of the van was taken in to police custody and produced before the Kurunegala Chief Magistrate yesterday and remanded.

The van had been badly damaged.

A combine operation was launched soon after the accident by the Mawathagama and Kurunegala Police.
