Traditional customs connected to the Sinhala and Tamil New Year are still continuing in rural areas.

The members of the Elders' Society of the Kendawala Grama Niladhari Division visited the members of the Elders' Society of the Mahagama Grama Niladhari Division for the New Year with oil cakes and sweetmeats in baskets on their heads. They walked nearly three miles in procession.

The members of the Mahagama Elders' Society welcomed the visitors warmly and treated them with sweetmeats. They also held a New Year festival including several traditional games. The ladies showed their skills in rabban playing. M.B. Balasooriya, Coordinator of the Elders' Societies in the Ibbagamuwa D.S. Division, presided.
