Dengue deaths reduced

The number of dengue deaths has been reduced in Sri Lanka due to the
high quality of the health service, said Health Minister Maithripala
Sirisena addressing media yesterday at Medical Research Institute
Auditorium.
"Though the number of dengue patients is increasing the number of
deaths has been reduced due to the good health service in the country.
According to the statistics of the Health Ministry 50 dengue deaths were
reported in 2010 January and only 20 dengue deaths were reported in 2012
January. About 18 dengue deaths were reported in 2010 February and it
has been reduced by 0.08 percent in 2012 February. About 21 deaths were
reported in March 2010 and only eight deaths were reported in March
2012." he said.
He also said that the main responsibility of the health service is
avoid deaths. The Health Ministry cannot destroy all dengue breeding
places alone. Other relevant authorities as well as the public have a
responsibility towards this. Due to the prevailing weather condition
there is a possibility of increasing the number of dengue patients.
"The Health Ministry will launch a National Mosquito Control Week
from May 14 to 20 with the support of all ministries and provincial
councils.
The Health Ministry always engage in dengue control activities.
Presently 125 mosquito larvae scientists work on dengue control."the
minister said.
