Kalpitiya gets Rs 4.2 b seven star hotel

Greenfield Development Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary company of Frigi Engineering will invest Rs.4.2 billion on an eco friendly seven star luxury resort in Kalpitiya .

Chairman of the company Walter Perera told Daily News Business that the company has already invested Rs 200 million on the development of a 135 acre land which is an island in Kalpitiya. The project is to be completed in two phases within 3-4 years time jointly with its UAE partner who is a hotelier.

Phase one will include the construction of the main building with 60 rooms, 50 cabanas and 14 villas with a mini golf course. Another 46 villas, 100 cabanas and 60 rooms will be constructed during stage two of phase one. Phase two will include another 60 villas.

A large number of job opportunities will be created once the project is completed. This will include 1,700 to 2,000 direct employment and another 6,000 indirect job opportunities for the people living in the area. The total land area around the hotel will be utilized for agricultural products such as coconut, local varieties of fruits and other crops required for the hotel with the intention of giving fresh products to customers.

The hotel is designed in such a manner that it would save energy by using renewable energy. Solar power will be used as much as possible along with wind power, he said.

The company also owns a another 20 acre land in Kalpitiya city planned for another hotel with 17 rooms, banquet hall and 13 cabanas. The construction of this hotel will commence next month. Depending on future tourist arrivals it will be developed to a 4 star hotel with 150 rooms, a mini golf course and a commercial complex.

This hotel will completely depend on solar power. Perera said that his longstanding experience with Frigi Engineering for the last 30 years has helped in a big way to focus on energy effective and innovative solutions for buildings.
