‘Opp. Leader aiming to demoralize state officials’
Jayasiri MUNASINGHE
The Opposition Leader and UNP Parliamentarians level baseless and
fabricated allegations against state officials aiming to cripple the
entire state service by discouraging them, Central Bank Governor Ajith
Nivard Cabraal said.
‘The Opposition Leader has said that the country’s economy has been
destroyed by the increasing Cost of Living in the manner of a landing
missile.
‘The Opposition Leader might think that people may be discouraged by
these comments, but, people are not discouraged,by such cheap
statements,’ he said.
The Governor pointed out that country’s economy is being controlled
well by President Mahinda Rajapkasa. Accordingly, inflation has been
continuously at a single digit for over 38 months. ‘But, during the rule
of certain economists, inflation had been at a single digit only for 23
months, ‘ he said.
‘It has been revealed that this is the longest period in the history
of the country, where inflation is at a single digit. During the last
two year period economic growth has been above 8 percent. He stressed
that foreign reserves could be increased up to US $ 6,100 million. He
added that our foreign exchange reserve will increase above US $ 7,000
million in the near future.
The Governor noted that therupee value depreciated more than 50
percent during the rule of the previous UNP government. ‘The then UNP
leaders planned to terminate the service of thousands of government
servants by privatising many government institutions. However, the
situation is stable now,’ Cabraal said. |
