Fisheries sector unfurls economic potential

The fisheries industry has made a 15.8 percent contribution to the
Sri Lankan economy by increasing the country's fish harvest by 100,000
metric tons last year, said Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development
Minister Dr.Rajitha Senarathne.

The minister revealed these facts at a discussion with Seychells
Foreign Minister Jean Paul Adam at the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
Development Ministry recently. They discussed fisheries industries in
the two countries.
They focused on manufacturing fisheries vessels and providing
technical training for fishermen.
"The Cey-Nor boat manufacturing dockyard in Karainagar has started
boat manufacturing. It created many employment opportunities.
The country needs assistance to manufacture long-liner vessels.
The national Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA)
has initiated ocean and fisheries research," the minister said.
Seychells Foreign Minister Jean Paul agreed to support Sri Lanka to
manufacture long-liner vessels and train Sri Lankans to use long-liners.
He agreed to send Seychells investors to Sri Lanka.
Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC) chairman Maheel Senarathne, Cey-Nor
chairman Sarath Kumara de Silva and Nara chairman Dr S Samarasundara
also participated in the discussion. |
