Diaspora member found with 16-year-old at Vavuniya lodge

Suspect, a British passport holder:

Police have arrested a 63-old British passport holder, said to be a member of the diaspora, in the company of an underage girl, at a lodge in Vavuniya. The suspect who had arrived from London, had taken the 16-year-old girl, who is an orphan to the lodge.

Tsunami alarm device theft: five held

Gandara Police arrested five fishermen who stole an antenna on the Indian coastline that had been installed to give out tsunami warnings and weather forecasts. The suspects are residents of Devinuwara. The stolen tsunami alarm device was discovered following a raid on the Devinuwara fisheries harbour. The tsunami alarm device had gone missing since March 24. The suspects were produced before the Matara magistrate on Sunday.

Rail carriage inspector turns heroin trafficker

Badulla Police seized Rs. 400,000 worth heroin and arrested a rail carriage inspector who is alleged to have been operating a drug peddling racket on the Badulla night mail over a period of time. According to Police, the suspect is alleged to have told the foreman at the Dematagoda station that a friend would be delivering some radio equipment at Dematagoda and to despatch same on the night mail to Badulla.

Navy nabs fishermen engaged in illegal fishing

The Naval Vessel P 152 attached to SLNS Vijaya of the North-western Naval Command on routine sea patrol arrested 18 persons engaged in illegal fishing using prohibited fishing gear recently. The arrested persons along with two prohibited fishing nets, two pairs of diving fins, two diving masks and five FGDs in their possession were handed over to Kalpitiya Police for further investigations.

Job agent released on bail

The manager of a foreign employment agency who was remanded for three months in connection with fraud, was released on Rs 50,000 personal bail by the Kurunegala Acting Magistrate. The suspect and his wife are charged with cheating two teenage girls by collecting seven thousand rupees from them after promising them employment in Lebanon and Italy. When the case was called before the Kurunegala Acting Magistrate the Rambadagalla Police told court that the complainants in the two cases were present in court but the second suspect and his wife were absent.
