‘Being self-sufficient in agriculture, govt can raise its head
proudly’

By being self-sufficient in agriculture, the country could raise its
head as a proud nation, Technology and Research Minister Pavithra
Wanniarachchi said.
She was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Divi Neguma Phase
III at Bulugahapitiya in Eheliyagoda recently.
Further, the minister said that as the Divi Neguma programme which
had been launched by the government with the objective of improving the
economy and the nutrition of the family unit, has been functioning
successfully and it had been possible to inaugurate the 3rd phase of the
Divi Neguma Phase III programme.
It would add to other successful projects initiated by President
Mahinda Rajapakse. At present, people are moving towards agriculture.
The government needto improve agricultural productions to rise up to the
world as a proud nation.
That is why the government, although incurring substantial loses,
provided fertilizer at Rs.350 to support farmers to improve production,
she said.
Even though there had been many difficulties, the lifestyle of the
people had improved.
The government has obtained loans from foreign sources for the
development of the country, as investments. With all such matters, the
government had the ability to rise up as a developed ntion in the
future, she explained.
Plants necessary for home gardening, chicks for poultry farming and
monetary assistance for the ornamental fish industry, had been
distributed among the people of the area as part of the Divi Neguma
programme for strengthening 2.5 million family units. wMember of the
Sabaragamuwa Provincial Kanchana Jayaratna, District Secretaries of
Ratnapura Sunil Kannangara, Eheliyagoda S.Wijayaraja, Members of
Eheliyagoda Pradeshiya Sabbha Sujeewa Wijesuriya, S.Karunadasa and the
general public took part in the ceremony.
