‘Sri Lanka now safe for tourism’
‘After eliminating terrorism, Sri Lanka is now achieving vast
development and progress in the tourism industry by attracting
international tourists to its shores. A large number of leading
international investors have also arrived to invest in Sri Lanka as the
government has been able to win their confidence and provide a secure
environment for large scale investments, said Deputy Speaker Chandima
Weerakkody, addressing the 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
sessions in Kampala, Uganda on April 5. Delegates from 172 countries
including Sri Lanka, are attending the sessions.
Weerakkody who explained that Sri Lanka had entered the league of
safest countries for tourists in the world, said the country's economy
was now developing at a rapid pace encompassing all parts including the
North and East.
The government is following a democratic strategy of developing the
respective areas of the country by accommodating the hopes and
aspirations and suggestions and proposals of the local people.
He said the secret behind Sri Lanka's success story was that it was
ruled by a popularly elected President who had more than 40 years of
political experience. Weerakkody also told the delegates that Sri Lanka
was now busy making arrangements to host the Commonwealth Parliamentary
Union sessions in September this year. He would invite all delegates to
attend these sessions so that they could personally see the rapid
development and progress achieved by Sri Lanka.
