One dies, 12 injured in collision
A driver died and 12 others, including six men and six women, were
injured in an accident when a bus and a tipper collided with a van on A9
road in Omanthei on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at 186 mile post on A9 when the bus collided
with the oncoming van, and the tipper ran into the van from its rear.
The injured were admitted to the Vavuniya hospital and later the
driver was transferred to the Anuradhapura hospital where he succumbed
to his injuries.
Snatch thief nabbed
A person was arrested for allegedly snatching a Rs 162,500 worth gold
chain from the principal of Pitiyagedara school, Wattegama on Wednesday.
The suspect, who arrived on a motorcycle, has snatched the chain while
she was walking on the road.
Police seized the motorcycle and found Rs 68,970 in his possession
which he had obtained after pawning the chain. Wattegama police are
investigating.
Wanted suspect netted
Athurugiriya police arrested a suspect wanted for more than 24
crimes, including thefts and burglaries, at a housing scheme in
Athurugiriya. Police seized some of the stolen goods in his possession.
The suspect has been remanded until April 18 after being produced before
the Kaduwela magistrate court.
Searching for body
Police, navy and beach life saving units are searching for a body of
a Chinese woman who drowned while bathing at the Giragala beach in
Weligama. Police said three Chinese expatriates who had been swimming
with her at the time had informed the police about the incident.
Weapons seized
A large stock of weapons was seized by the Mullaitivu STF officers in
Pannirippu and Karadippuwali on Monday. Acting on a tip-off received by
the intelligence unit of the camp, IP Munasinghe and a team carried out
a sudden raid in two locations and found the stock which had been hidden
by LTTE.
They seized 5 RPGs, ammunition, five fuses, nine anti-armed car RPGs
, 4,500 thirty nine mm bullets, seven RPG chargers, three detonators and
a 10 kg bomb.
Nabbed with cannabis
A passenger in a bus was arrested with a large amount of cannabis in
his possession at the Hanwella bus station on Tuesday. Poogoda STF
officers led by IP K M Manohara arrested the man while he was travelling
in a bus with 1.8 kg of cannabis.
Caught illegally felling trees
Four persons with a bako loader were taken into custody by the
Nikaweratiya police for illegally removing 20 trees from a state-owned
land in Kavigama in Rasnayakapura.
Police arrested the suspects acting on a complaint lodged by the
divisional secretary of Rasnayakapura which stated that the suspects had
removed 20 full grown trees including milla, dhamana, koon, halamba and
kalumediriya. |
