Cabinet Decisions
Rs 145 m for construction of Mahaweli Maha Seya of Kotmale
The Cabinet has decided to grant Rs 145 million for the construction
of the Mahaweli Maha Seya from 2013 on a proposal by Prime Minister D M
Jayaratne.
The construction of Mahaweli Seya began on March 20, 1983 on a
concept of late Minister Gamini Dissanayake.
Secondary school in Matara under Education Ministry
A proposal was made by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena to
establish a secondary school in a new building complex constructed at a
cost of Rs 110 million with funding from International Children's Fund
in Rassadeniya, Matara under a programme to reconstruct schools damaged
by the tsunami.
It was constructed to shift Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Matara to the
new building but due to a disagreement the shifting did not take place.
It is proposed to initiate a secondary school in this building under
the Education Ministry with subject streams such as physical science,
biological science, commerce, arts and technology with classes from
Grades 10 to 13.
UNESCO-South Asian Centre for Teacher Development in Sri Lanka
UNESCO has identified Sri Lanka to set up the South Asian Centre for
Teacher Development, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena informed
Cabinet.
This Centre is expected to contribute to improve the quality of
education in Sri Lanka and in South Asia. It will concentrate on areas
of continuous professional development of teacher educators/counsellors/advisors
and mentors for school based teacher development.
Chinese Cultural Center in Sri Lanka
A proposal by Culture and the Arts Minister T B Ekanayake to sign a
Memorandum of Understanding with the government of the People's Republic
of China to further strengthen the friendly relationship between the two
countries was approved by Cabinet.
A Chinese Cultural Centre will be established and maintained by the
Chinese Cultural Ministry.
Galle Kachcheri Building sections to be rented out
Cabinet approved to lease portions of the Galle Fort Building,
declared a world heritage, for commercial or other purposes without
harming it on a proposal by National Heritage Minister Dr Jagath
Balasooriya .
It was decided that the Urban Development Authority should renovate
the building, retaining its archaeological and architectural value, to
be converted into a museum.
