'President, the only leader to improve living standards of masses'

'President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the only leader since Independence, who made a sincere effort to improve the living standards of the rural masses. It was he who charted a bright future for the future generations.

'Sinister forces who despised the achievements the country gained under his leadership, were attempting to undermine the country's progress by levelling baseless charges against the country and its leadership, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, said.

The minister was addressing a meeting after inaugurating rehabilitation work on the Pallegama-Warakawa road in Pasbage Korale under the Mahinda Chinthana, 'One development project for each village' programme.

Aluthgamage said that terrorism which had dogged the country's progress for nearly three decades, was eradicated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa within a period of three years.

The opposition leaders who knew that they could not even dream of gaining power until President Mahinda Rajapaksa was at the helm, were trying to obstruct the country's progress by hatching various conspiracies against the government.

He said the government had planned to ensure that all present bus routes were carpeted by 2018. He said that once such development work had been completed, there would be no 'difficult villages'. They would be totally erased from the country's map like the previous border villages. He said that when countries led by the US had brought a resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC sessions, the Opposition Leader visited Jaffna and claimed that there was no development at all in the North.

An Opposition would never make such wild claims if it was really patriotic minded.

Aluthgamage said that villages that had been devastated for over a period of 30 years, have been rebuilt within a short period of four years, to ensure decent livelihoods for the residents. People in the North and East were fully aware of the services rendered by the government for their progress.
