Commander recalls close ties between SL, Pakistan armies

A colourful Guard of Honour was presented by troops of Pakistan Army at Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters at Rawalpindi, Monday morning in honour of Army Commander Lieut. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, who is currently in Pakistan at the cordial invitation of his Pakistan counterpart, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Soon after Lieut. Gen. Jayasuriya was welcomed at the entrance to the military complex, General Headquarters, he was ushered to the special dais to receive the salute in the Guard of Honour in keeping with military traditions.

After the visiting Commander received the salute, he was requested to honour the fallen soldiers of the Pakistan Army at Yadgar-e-Shuhada. Lieut. Gen.Jayasuriya laid a floral wreath. He was later conducted to the secretarial office of Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff where he was warmly received by his host, General Parvez Kayani.

Ddiscussions that followed between both Army Chiefs at General Headquarters centred largely on military matters of mutual and bilateral interest and possibilities of further increasing exchange of training programmes between two military organizations.

Revival of exchange of sports programmes among military personnel of both armies, an old practice that existed in the past was also among one of the key issues that surfaced during cordial discussions.

All Principal Staff Officers in the Pakistan Army afterwards greeted the visiting Army Chief as a formality of courtesy and tradition and conducted him to the main auditorium where Pakistan’s Director General Maintenance submitted a briefing on Pakistan Army’s current roles and tasks and its contributions with special reference to its ongoing Army training modules and programmes to suit modern and multifaceted threats, often tend to emerge or have appeared in the world.

As the second item on the day’s itinerary, Pakistan’s Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Khalid S. Wynne received the visiting Commander at his office and presented a detailed briefing on existing ‘Military Co-operation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka’.

The day’s itinerary ended up with an official banquet, held in honour of the visiting Commander and his entourage.
