Woman held for abandoning infant

A woman has been arrested by Urubokka Police for allegedly abandoning her three day old infant behind a tourist hotel in Matara following a tip off. The 25 year old woman, a resident of Ampanagala, Rotamba in Urubokka, allegedly abandoned her child among shrubbery in a tourist hotel backyard in Matara on March 28.

The suspect was directed to have a medical test at Matara hospital to obtain scientific proof of her delivery. Police rescued the baby while he had been stranded at the back of the hotel.

His body was covered with ants when the Police found him. The baby sustained injuries due to ant bites.

The infant was taken to Matara hospital and is at the Premature Baby Care Unit.
