Australian help for slum dwellers

The Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka has funded a programme to
upgrade the existing basic amenities in 20 settlements in the city and
the precincts. Funds were released under the Direct Assistance
Programme, a small grants scheme of Aus-AID.
Upgrading work include cleaning and repairing damaged or blocked
sewer lines, replacing doors and squatting pans of rundown toilets,
repairs to common bathing and washing places and water lines.
Australian funds are being used to purchase the necessary materials
and paying for skilled labour. Community members are providing the
necessary unskilled labour component. Funds are being released through
the Society of People Centred Development Council (CDC).
Sharmadhana campaigns to clean the living environment were also
organized by the CDCs. Most communities have been able to dedicate one
of the upgraded toilets for the exclusive use of children.
