Vocational training for disabled

The Social Services Ministry, on the initiative of Minister Felix Perera has formulated a programme to obtain the contribution of the disabled community numbering five percent of the population to the national development effort by providing them with proper vocational training.

The department's disabled training centre at Seeduwa, Ketawala, Wattegama, Telambuyaya and other areas will be upgraded in keeping with modern trends and needs.

The centre will be provided modern equipment and training courses will be improved with the deployment of well trained instructors.

The department will obtain support from JAICA and the Geonnandam Institute of Korea to upgrade the programme.

A department release said Rs 16 million was spent on the disabled training programme last year and 70 candidates who completed training would be found employment with the assistance of the private sector.

Already, firms Marks and Spencer and Asia Bike have agreed to provide employment to some of these candidates.
