Manamperi launches Suvanda Salana
Parakrama Manamperi, a lead guitarist of fame in the 1970s, launched
his latest CD titled 'Suvanda Salana' recently. Manamperi had his
primary education in Kingswood College.
"My fascination was to play the mouth organ and guitar all the time.
Senior musician Padmasiri Pasquel saw my talents and put me in Halians
band."
So many people witnessed Manamperi's talents. Former minister Hector
Kobbekaduwa's wife gifted him an accordion. He continued to mesmerize
the audience throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
Manamperi joined Agriculture Department in 1973 as the Chief
Photographer. He applied for a premature retirement to open a studio of
his own. He then obtained two scholarships from British Council. His
first visit to overseas was Malaysia. Manamperi played in clubs to
collect money for his overseas trip.
"I was quite fond of England. Even since my childhood, I behaved like
a white fellow. I liked wearing shoes. But when I went to England, I
observed how poor the most artistes are. I saw how they struggle to
maintain their life."
