The CIC onion processing plant

CIC Agri Businesses which commenced big onion seed production in 2002
took a further step in this direction with the introduction of canned
big onion seeds. Since big onion seeds are very minute and delicate in
nature, its quality declines very fast when exposed to high temperature
and humidity. The new technology that was introduced by CIC Agri
Businesses protects the quality of the big onion seeds from adverse
environmental conditions and thereby helps farmers to eventually obtain
healthy and vigorous plants which guarantee a good harvest.
CIC Agri Businesses ventured into local big onion seed production to
meet the acute demand of high quality seed. Presently the company
produces around 3,000 kg of high quality big onion seeds at it s Farm in
Pelwehera. As the demand for these seeds have been high the Company has
already initiated plans to increase the existing production. Big onion
is a major food crop grown in Sri Lanka. However, the island imports
around 140,000 tons to meet the local consumption due to inadequate
local production.
Big onion farmers in Sri Lanka obtain very low levels of yield due to
the use of poor quality onion seed imported from India. Experiments have
shown that yields could be increased to higher levels with the use of
high quality seeds. |
