Double murder of monks:

Attorney assaulted for defending the accused

Attorney-At-Law Sumith Silva, who defended the two suspects in the murder of two Buddhist monks at the Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya, had been severely assaulted by a group of people in the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Courts premises yesterday.

The Police had arrested the suspects on information given by a young boy who had noted down the vehicle’s number on the sand and given it to the Police within a few minutes, time. The suspects had been arrested the same day.

The suspects were produced yesterday before the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.

Residents of the area who had gathered at the court premises, had demanded the defending lawyer to avoid appearing for the accused and had assaulted him following a heated argument.

Attorney Sumith Silva has lodged a complaint at the Mirihana Police over assault.
