Lecture on near death experience
A lecture on modern findings on near-death experience will be
delivered by Consultant Cardiologist Dr Namal Wijesinghe at Dr N M
Perera Centre, Cotta Road, Colombo 8 today at 4.15 pm.
The second edition of Journalist Thilak Senasinghe's Manaranjana
Mitya Katha will also be launched to coincide the event.
The lecture is organized by the Rationalists Association of Sri Lanka
and will be open to the public free.
Sagara Tharanga in SP
Ridma DISSANAYAKE
Navy's mega cultural show Sagara Tharanga presented by the Navy Band
will be staged in the Southern Province from today.
Sagara Tharanga is a free show initiated on a concept of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa. It is to be staged at the Naval premises, Julpallama,
Tissamaharama today, Samanala Sports Grounds, Galle March 26,
Kotugodalle Sports Grounds, Tangalle April 1 and Sanath Jayasuriya
Sports Grounds,Matara April19.
The show, choreographed blended with eastern and western artistic
traditions, will provide a unique aesthetic experience to the public.
Sri Lankan student wins Malvern Poster Prize
Thakshila Sachini Balasuriya, a Sri Lankan student, studying at the
University of Melbourne, Australia has won the Malvern Instruments prize
for the best student poster presented at the recent UK Colloids 2011
conference. She described in her work "Dynamic Forces between Bubbles
with Switchable Peptide Surfactants".
Thakshila is a third year PhD student in the Dynamic Interracial
Forces Group and her thesis work is focused on nanoscale interfactions
forces in Biomolecular System in Soft Matter. Thakshila Sachini
Balasuriya is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Balasuriya of
Imbulgoda, Sri Lanka and past student of Musaeus College, Colombo and
Choueifat College, Abudhabi, UAE.
Seminar on Dhamma education
A seminar on Dhamma education for Sunday School Dhamma Teachers in
Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and Ratmalana areas, will be conducted on March
24 from 9.00 a.m to 2.00 p.m by the Dehiwala Mount Lavinia YMBA.
The Venue will be the main hall of the "Bauddha Mandira" at the same
premises. Certificates and gifts will be awarded to the
teachers-participant. Lunch and refreshments will also be provided.
Gruesome murder of bhikkhus condemned
Kotte Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chief Organizer and former Minister
Rohitha Bogollagama has condemned the gruesome murder of the two
Bhikkhus, Ven Pitigala Dinasiri Thera and Ven Boralesgamuwe Gunaratana
Thera of the Kotte Rajamahaviharaya by an assailant as a heinous crime
committed by a person with a brutal mentality which will never be
condoned by civilized people.
In a condolence message issued yesterday Bogollagama has expressed
his deepest sympathies to the next of kin of the two bhikkhus and their
colleagues at the temple and said the Kotte Raja Mahaviharaya is a
temple with a long history which has rendered a great Sasana service to
Kotte in particular and the country in general.
Watery grave for two women
YASARATNE GAMAGE
Two women were drowned while bathing in an abandoned clay pit in
Yogiyana, Walwaka in Dankotuwa yesterday.
The victims , a 60 year woman and a relative of hers aged 27 had gone
swimming as the pit has been a regular bathing tank for the villagers.
The water level was deeper than usual as a group of persons had
engaged in illegal sand mining at the pit the previous day which had
deepened the pit. Dankotuwa Police are investigating.
YWCA fund raiser
"The YWCA of Sri Lanka at No. 7, Rotunda Gardens, Colombo 3, will
conduct a Fund Raising Effort in the form of a Sale on March 29. All are
welcome. The proceeds will be utilized to empower women and girls.
Special prayers
The Women’s Bureau of Moors Islamic Cultural Home has organized
special prayers, Dua Majlis to invoke blessings on the country today at
3.30 pm at No. 7, Lilly Avenue, Colombo 6. All members are requested to
