Jumbo deaths:

Cop, wife arrested

A police constable and his wife have been arrested by Galgamuwa Police and Wild Life Conservation Department officials in connection with the death of two wild elephants.

The suspects were produced before Nihal Gamini, the Acting Magistrate of Galgamuwa on Friday March 16 and remanded till March 21.

The two elephants, a male and a she elephant had died of electrocution.

These wild elephants have come in contact with the unsafe live wires accidentally that had been set by the suspects around their dwelling place. Veterinary surgeon of the Wildlife Department Chandana Jayasinghe held the post mortem examination and confirmed the deaths of elephants were due to electroculation. A team of officials attached to Wildlife Department is now conducting further investigations in this regard.
