PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

 

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the Atavisi Budu Meduru, the Ranweta and the Ethpavura surrounding the Sacred Bo tree of the Sri Nagarama Viharaya in Mahawewa. Members of the Maha Sangha invoked blessings on the President by chanting Seth Pirith on this occasion. Here, the President offering Atapirikara to Parivenadhipathi of Vidyalankara Pirivena, Kelaniya and Chief Adhikarana Sanganayake of Colombo and Chilaw Ven Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayake Thera. North Western Province Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe, State Resources and Enterprise Development Minister Dayashritha Tissera, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and provincial minister Ashoka Wadigamangawa were also present. No foreign intervention will be condoned - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday that Sri Lankans are used to protecting and safeguarding human rights for more than 2,500 years. He said following the eradication of 30 years of terrorism and when the country has been placed on a rapid development track, no foreign intervention will be allowed and no one can meddle in the internal affairs of the country.

Buddhasasana receives highest state patronage - PM

The Buddhasasana has received the highest state patronage and protection under the tenure of the present government as never before in the country’s recent history said Prime Minister D M Jayaratne. He was speaking at a ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s office to mark the award of scholarships to a batch of Samanera bhikkhus from difficult areas in the country.

Four arrested in monk murders

The Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of two Buddhist monks attached to the Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven. Pitigala Jinasiri Thera and Borelasgamuwe Gunarathana thera are the two monks of the Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya who were stabbed to death inside the temple premises on Tuesday night.

Job agency sub agents to be registered

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is planning to register sub-agents(believed to be in excess of 10,000), who are currently working in an unauthorized capacity in the procurement of migrant worker aspirants on behalf of licensed agents. Their income is by way of commissions earned by introducing migrant worker aspirants to licensed agencies.
